All our projects are designed to build on our core activities and make an important contribution to complement the regular work of NIJZ researchers. The activities we carry out in the framework of our projects contribute to improving the quality of the results of the tasks carried out in all the activities of the NIJZ. Most of the projects we run at the NIJZ are European, so experts are involved in international networks, making the necessary new contacts and gaining new knowledge in key areas.

We use major European projects to maximise the added value for Slovenia and for Slovenian strategies in different areas of public health. This way, we maximise the sustainable solutions for Slovenian public health that can be obtained through European grants.

The projects we carry out are funded through various financial mechanisms:

  • National funding from the Slovenian Research and Innovation Agency (ARIS);
  • National funding from the Ministry of Health under the Public Call for Proposals in the field of health protection and health promotion 2022–2025;
  • Cohesion Policy funds, such as the Operational Programme for the European Cohesion Policy 2014–2020 and 2021–2027 (European Social Fund and European Regional Development Fund), the Recovery and Resilience Facility and REACT-EU funds (Recovery assistance for cohesion and the territories of Europe);
  • funding from the EU4Health programme 2021–2027, the EU’s flagship programme for long-term public health investments in Member States. The funding is managed by the European Health and Digital Executive Agency (HaDEA). Most of the projects at the NIJZ are in the form of so-called Joint Actions, joint initiatives between the EU and Member States in key areas of public health;
  • funding from other European mechanisms such as Horizon Europe, ERASMUS+, COST, and funding from various European Directorates (such as DG Justice) and Centres (such as ECDC).
