The National Institute of Public Health (NIJZ) is a central national establishment dedicated to educating, protecting and improving the health of the population of the Republic of Slovenia through awareness campaigns and other preventive measures.

Using knowledge to achieve better health

As a central institution in the field of public health, NIJZ, with its 400 employees and numerous partners from various social sectors and non-governmental organizations, strives to fulfil its mission of contributing to the better health and welfare of the Slovenian population. The main activities of NIJZ include the following:

  • Monitoring and evaluating the healthcare system and population health;
  • Identifying health threats and developing measures to control them;
  • Managing databases of health and healthcare services; and
  • Promoting health and developing professional foundations for health-friendly policies, programmes and disease prevention measures.

In addition to its work in the aforementioned fields, NIJZ contributes to new solutions by participating in numerous international public health projects. By disseminating new knowledge and best practices, it fulfils its role in research, education and training public health professionals.
